Case Study: Stannah Platform Lift Wins Access Award for Welsh Health & Wellbeing Centre

A Stannah Midilift SL platform lift has delivered full accessibility to wheelchair users in Celtic Court, a health and wellbeing centre in Bridgend, Wales, earning it the ‘Best inclusive building’ accolade at Bridgend County Borough Council’s tenth annual Local Authority Building Control’s Building Excellence Awards.

This brand-new, purpose-built facility is a base for a wide range of support services offered by lead tenant, the Welsh Centre for Action on Dependency and Addiction, the Community Drug and Alcohol Team, and the Bridgend Involvement Group. It also won ‘Best public service building’ for the quality of workmanship, and has been nominated for a national award.

The through-entry disabled lift was specified by Chris Waite, Senior Architectural Technician at BCBC:

“We are delighted that Celtic Court has excelled at the LABC Building Excellence Awards, and we are also delighted that our choice of a Stannah Midilift platform lift was pivotal in winning it ’Best inclusive building’. Based on previous installations of this model, we were happy to re-specify it in a facility that needed access for people of all mobility levels.”

The hydraulic, 4-person (400kg) Midilift SL fits where standard passenger lifts can’t, bringing access for all to two storeys of vital community services. Supplied within its own glazed and powder-coated enclosure, with minimal fixings and minimal pit (or ramp option), it is quick and easy to install – typically 2-3 days. Single phase power consumption and energy efficient lighting keep running and maintenance costs low.

It complements the stair access and the light, airy aesthetic, and users find the constant-pressure operation straightforward. An intercom and klaxon are within easy reach, should attention be required.

The Midilift SL also helps Celtic Court’s owners meet the requirements of Part M and BS 8300, as well as helping to meet obligations under EN81-41 and the Equality Act 2010 (formerly the DDA), whilst taking up the minimal amount of building space possible.

As with all Stannah lift products, the Midilift SL is covered by Stannah’s comprehensive lift servicing plan, with four service visits in the first year and continued lift maintenance by the South West England and South Wales branch of Stannah Lift Services, part of a nationwide network providing comprehensive lift servicing and support.
